STUTTGART: Just in time for the Paris motor show, Daimler-Benz's dedicated performance arm, AMG has been let loose on the latest generation Mercedes E-Class sedan and station wagon.

The new E 43 4Matic models, which will make their real-world debut in Paris on Sept 28, are described as simply the first stage of AMG enhancement, in other words, even more powerful E 63 versions with V8 engines are in the pipeline.

However, for those that can't wait, the E 43 is no slouch. AMG has taken the cars' standard 3-litre V6 and upped the power to 401hp via improvements to the powerplant's twin turbochargers. And then, thankfully, routed that power and the accompanying 520Nm of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission to all for wheels for greater control and handling.

"We have considerably expanded our model range for performance-oriented customers with our new 43 models," said Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers. "The E 43 4Matic adds particularly versatile alternatives for business and recreation to this extensive product range."

Indeed the station wagon, a type of car that usually appeals to people because of its practicality - space for all the family and their luggage - has been turned into a muscle car for soccer moms. Even with the extra weight and aerodynamic limitations of a larger trunk, it can go from 0-100kph in 4.7 seconds, making it just 0.1 seconds slower than the more shapely sedan. However, that power is being offered with responsibility, as Mercedes claims the car can deliver a fuel economy of 8.4l/100km on the combined European test cycle.

Other refinements over standard models include retuned sports suspension that can be set up for a stiffer or softer ride, depending on who is sitting in the passenger seat, faster shift times from the gearbox and a shortened steering ratio. However, aware that with the station wagon in particular that the car is going to spend as much time negotiating carparks as it is hairpin bends, the ratio can be adjusted for speed and situation.

Then of course there's the exterior styling. No one who gazes upon either E 43 will be in any doubt of their performance potential thanks to 19-inch alloy wheels, three huge air intakes in the front apron and the twin polished tail pipes and diffuser at the rear.
