KUALA LUMPUR: The Aprilia Shiver 750 naked motorcycle has become the Italian motorcycle builder’s first bike to be assembled outside of its plant in Noale, Italy.

In an agreement between the Piaggio Group and Naza Pemira Sdn Bhd - the sole distributor of Aprilia bikes in Malaysia, assembly of the Shiver will begin in early 2015 at the Naza Bikes factory in Shah Alam.

For the time being, the agreement also outlined that the locally assembled Shiver will only be available in Malaysia, while the rest of Aprilia’s models continue to be fully imported.

An investment of RM5mil was required to develop the Shiver’s assembly operations with an additional RM1mil for a parts inventory facility.

According to Piaggio Asia Pacific managing director Simone Niccolai, the Shiver was chosen to be assembled in Malaysia due to the growing local appeal and subsequent demand for naked bikes.

Priced at RM43,888 with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty, the Shiver comes in measuring 2,120mm-long, 800mm-wide (at handlebar), 1,135mm-tall (at instrument panel) and a saddle height of 810mm.

Mounted on a modular trellis aluminium frame, its six-speed manual transmission is mated to a 749cc 90-degree V-twin wet-sump engine producing 95hp at 9,000rpm and 81Nm of torque at 7,000rpm, while sipping from a 15-litre fuel tank.

With a steering angle of 25.9-degrees, the Shiver uses an upside down front fork suspension while its rear is equipped with an adjustable (rebound and preload) hydraulic Sachs shock absorber for its 109mm trailing aluminium swingarm.

Grip comes from its 120/70 (front) and 180/55 (rear) tyres on its 17-inch wheels, while stopping power comes from its new stainless steel wave discs – dual 320mm front discs and a single 240mm disc for the rear, and steel braided brake hoses.

With the advent of the Shiver in CKD form next year, it will possess Aprilia’s latest second-generation ride-by-wire electronic throttle with three selectable responses – Touring, Sport and Rain.

In addition, it now sports improved ergonomics, new handlebars, a tapered saddle and a subtle facelift.

“We are proud and greatly honoured to be the first and only company chosen to begin CKD assembly for Aprilia outside Italy and hope to become the centrum for export around the ASEAN region in the coming months,” said NAZA World Group of Companies group executive chairman and group CEO Datuk Wira Haji SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin.
