BMW launches its largest test track for automated driving and parking
By CARSIFU | 28 July 2023MUNICH: The BMW Group has launched the Future Mobility Development Centre (FMDC) in Sokolov, Czech Republic.
The 300 million euros (RM1.5bil) facility will play a key role in the company's future mobility development.
The FMDC, which spans 600 hectares, tests automated driving and parking up to level 4, ensuring maximum flexibility and efficiency. It is BMW’s largest test site in the world.
The site is designed to meet the highest safety requirements of customers and is a unique location for testing technological innovations.
It employs over 100 skilled workers.
In Sokolov, a former surface mine was transformed into a modern test site, providing 100% green electricity from renewable sources.
The site is equipped with an innovative water management system that systematically collects rainwater and uses it for track irrigation.
The protection and promotion of the local biodiversity were also considered throughout the planning process: amphibian control systems were installed throughout the site to ensure the safe crossing of animals across the test track.
A total 2.2 million cubic metres of soil previously excavated by nearby mining were used to build the site.
