KUALA LUMPUR: A Japanese company today started worldwide sales of a vehicle users can carry with them in a bag, dubbed "WALKCAR".

The US$2,280 (RM9,576) vehicle looks more like an electric skateboard except for its squarish dimensions.

The company that created WALKCAR, Cocoa Motors Inc of Tokyo, said it has the same size as a 13-inch laptop computer and is a small and light "car in a bag" weighing only 2.9kg.

It is made up of a carbon fibre deck and aircraft-grade aluminium. The four sensors installed inside the standing surface lets a user control the basic maneuver based on him shifting his weight to accelerate, deaccelerate, and turn without using a handle or a remote controller.

The vehicle height is just 74mm above the ground. The flat and square standing surface allows a user to step off instantly in any direction safely. It can even roll up slopes of up to 10 degrees and has an automatic stopping function.

WALKCAR can reach a speed of up to 16kph and has a range of up to 7km. It takes an hour to fully charge up the 68Wh Li-ion battery.

Since the prototype was announced in 2016, Cocoa motors had received 7,800 pre-orders from 13 countries.
