DETROIT: Ford and messaging service Snapchat are co-operating to provide special access to 2016's edition of the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

Starting on June 18 from 3pm local time in France (1pm UTC), exclusive videos and photos will be distributed via the Ford24Story account on Snapchat, allowing followers to see the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing team witness the race in real time.

Cockpit video will be available via FordPerformance.tv in co-operation with YouTube.

The race is especially important to Ford as it marks the 50th anniversary of its own historic overall victory in 1966, at which it the marque occupied all three podium places.

That 1966 victory is considered especially significant as, thanks to a combination of groundbreaking technology and some of the biggest names in motorsport, Ford toppled Ferrari from LeMans' peak.

Fast forward to the 2016 race and its the Porsche Team that is 2015's defending champion, with an Audi vehicle having won the race 13 times since the turn of the century.
