Germany testing armoured speed traps to catch speeding drivers

BERLIN: German police are trying out futuristic, armour-plated super speed traps in a bid to outwit drivers who travel too fast.

The devices have cameras hidden inside which can be trained on each traffic lane. Details of offenders are relayed directly to a mobile police network.

The new speed traps, being trialled in the capital Berlin, could be introduced across the country if testing is successful. The high-tech traps are controlled remotely and run on batteries which last for up to five days.

The speed cameras are also cunningly disguised: One version looks like a cross between a modern sculpture and a military tank without wheels.

The other is contained in a so-called "enforcement trailer" which could easily be mistaken for a humble camping trailer. It even has an authentic numberplate at the back which allows it to be transported on the road.

The armour-plating on the traps is designed to stop vandalism, which is widespread in Europe. Disgruntled motorists have been known to saw off conventional post-mounted speed cameras or even blow them up with dynamite, destroying all the data inside.

New armoured devices have also been tried out by police in France, Britain and other European countries.
