JPJ can't bar cyclists from highways
By THE STAR | 14 September 2020IPOH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) says it will work with other enforcement agencies over incidents involving cyclists on highways.
Its director-general, Datuk Seri Shaharuddin Khalid, said JPJ did not have jurisdiction over cyclists, and could only advise them about road safety.
He said this in response to a question regarding a group of cyclists who were photographed cycling on a highway, purportedly near Seremban. The picture went viral on social media.
"We can work with other enforcement agencies to look into the issue along with the police, but we cannot issue summonses to them.
"When it comes to bicycles on the road, it is more the jurisdiction of the local governments," he said in a press conference after opening JPJ's Enforcement Highway Monitoring Centre here today.
