Kia EV9 wins 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Car titles


NEW YORK: The all-electric Kia EV9 has captured the prestigious 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Car titles.

The wins, which were selected by a jury of 100 automotive journalists from 29 countries, were announced at the World Car Awards ceremony at the New York Auto Show.

Kia's parent company Hyundai also came out a winner with the Ioniq 5 N grabbing the World Performance Car trophy.

In the World Car of the Year category, the EV9 managed to beat two other finalists - the BYD Seal and Volvo EX30.

The EV9 edged out the BMW i5 and Volvo EX30 in the World Electric Car category.

The EV9 was recognised for its innovative design, spacious seven-seat interior, and competitive price point.

The vehicle, which is based on the Kia/Hyundai E-GMP platform, is the first Kia to get a fourth-generation battery technology for improved performance.

Kia president and CEO Ho Sung Song said the triumph is a testament to the Korean car maker's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design excellence.

"The Kia EV9’s continued success will drive us to keep delivering exceptional vehicles that redefine the driving experience for customers around the world," he said.

To-date, Kia has won a total of five titles at the World Car Awards.

The Kia EV6 GT won the World Performance Car title last year.

In 2020, the Kia Telluride was chosen the World Car of the Year winner and the Kia Soul EV won the World Urban Car category.
