KL City Hall may close carpark to employees on Fridays
By THE STAR | 01 October 2021KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is considering closing its carparks on Fridays to encourage its employees to take public transport.
Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said DBKL wanted its staff to lead the way in fostering a low-carbon lifestyle.
“We are still studying the proposal to see if it will be well-received by our staff.
“If we could get even half of them to agree, that would be a good sign,” he said.
This was among several proposals being looked into by DBKL to reduce carbon emissions in the capital.
They include plans to harvest energy via alternative sources.
“We are identifying a suitable location to build a solar farm,” said Mahadi.
In September, DBKL gave the My30 travel pass to 1,000 employees to encourage them to take public transport to work.
Mahadi hoped such initiatives would serve as an example to others to reduce private vehicle usage.
The mayor was met after the launch of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Centre in Jalan Raja.
The centre, next to Kuala Lumpur Library, provides information related to urbanisation.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, in his speech to launch the centre, said it reflected the city’s commitment towards sustainable development.
“Many cities across the globe are grappling with challenges posed by environmental degradation and changing demographics.
“DBKL will continue to play its role to support the holistic development of Kuala Lumpur,” said Shahidan.
Also present were his deputy Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias and Urbanice Malaysia chief executive officer Norliza Hashim.
SDG Centre is open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays.
