Major roads in KL under water, four rivers exceed danger level
By BERNAMA | 19 December 2021KUALA LUMPUR: The continuous downpour since Friday has affected several areas in the capital including the city centre and major roads.
Based on several photos shared by the Kuala Lumpur Command and Control Centre (KLCCC), previously known as The Integrated Transportation Information System (ITIS) of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the flooded areas included Jalan Raja Laut, Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Sultan Azlan and Jalan Ampang.
The photos also showed situations where vehicles were trapped by the rising floodwaters and unable to move as the water level reached knee-high.
It was also reported that part of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim heading towards Istana Negara is sinking.
Environment and Water Minister, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in a tweet also informed that four main rivers have crossed the danger level namely Sungai Batu in Sentul, Sungai Klang in Tun Perak, Sungai Gombak in Jalan Tun Razak and Sungai Kerayong near Razak Mansion.
He warned that the flood situation could worsened.
He also said any complaints related to floods can be made through the Flood Operations Room of the Kuala Lumpur Department of Irrigation and Drainage at 03-22028142 or through its Public Complaints Management System.
Meanwhile, Prasarana through a tweet announced the closure of Masjid Jamek Light Rail Transit (LRT) station until further notice, because of the worsening flood situation.
"All trains will not stop at the Masjid Jamek Station. Passengers are advised to take alternative transport. We apologise for the inconvenience caused," read the statement.
The Smart tunnel is also closed to traffic.
Smart announced in a Twitter post the status of tunnel would be announced through media and electronic information boards (VMS) on roads.
The status of the Smart Highway Tunnel can be followed through the SMART website at www.smarttunnel.com.my, twitter@smarttunnel or "Smart Tunnel" on Facebook, according to the company.
Extreme continuous heavy rain is expected to occur today in several areas in the capital, Perak, Pahang and Selangor, according to the Meteorological Department.
