KUALA LUMPUR; Asean boasts a huge market for the automotive industry, but poor infrastructure is a hindrance to its exponential growth.

For instance, Indonesia's automotive industry is concentrated in its capital, Jakarta, Partner of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants Dr Martin Tonko said recently.

"In order to sell more cars (in Indonesia), you need more streets to accommodate those cars," he said after the Asean-EU Business Summit's Panel Discussion held in conjunction with the 47th Asean Economic Ministers' (AEM) Meeting and Related Meeting from Aug 20-25.

Hence, the industry's development is very much connected and dependent on good infrastructure, he added.

On other developments, Tonko commended some Asean member countries for striving to shift to clean fuel such as the introduction of Eco Car Programme in Thailand.

"The discussions on fuel shift from Euro 4 to Euro 5 would also make the industry stronger," he said.
