Porsche expands open source software strategy

STUTTGART: Porsche AG is expanding its open source initiative by publishing a strategic guide to using free and open source software.

The FOSS Movement, published almost two years after the initiative, aims to shorten development cycles, reduce costs, promote innovation, and improve software quality.

The publication describes the fundamental values and principles of free and open source software, as well as employees' roles in working with it.

The FOSS Movement is supported by employees from vehicle development, corporate IT, legal departments, and Porsche Digital.

Porsche aims to establish a common foundation of values, principles, and goals across all subsidiaries and national borders, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing across company borders.

The Porsche Open Source Office has implemented measures such as the development of lean processes and uniform tools based on FOSS, ensuring a consistent use of open source throughout the company.

Porsche is also actively engaged with the worldwide open source communities. The objective: to learn from and with each other and advance the open-source software movement. This facilitates collaboration and knowledge-sharing across company borders.

The open source model is already providing the foundation for various solutions in Porsche's software ecosystem.

It is involved in the Android Open Source Project, allowing analysis of software code, bringing own requirements to bear in the global project and improve the overall driving experience on the basis of an established platform.. This approach also provides opportunities to find new talent and collaborate with technology leaders.
