Protective motorcycle gear won't save your life, study shows
By DPA | 31 July 2019MUENSTER (Germany): It's long been said that the special design of protective clothing for motorcyclists will reduce the risk of a fatal injury in the case of a motorcycle accident. In practice, however, it's not working, as a new study shows.
A study from the German Insurers Accident Research Association (GDV) found that motorcyclists are not benefiting from general developments in road safety.
For example, standard protective clothing for use on motorcycles is failing to prevent life-threatening injuries in the event of a collision at speeds of over 25kph.
Tens of thousands around the world die annually in motorcycle accidents, and motorcyclists typically make up a far higher proportion of accidents than car drivers. In Germany, two-thirds of motorcyclists are the cause of the accidents in which they die.
