Shah Alam running EV charging pilot project
By BERNAMA | 01 March 2024SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam City Council is conducting a pilot project aimed at drafting guidelines for the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers at the local authority level in Selangor.
Selangor Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the pilot project is being carried out following the guidelines for installing EV vehicle chargers issued by the federal government in September 2023.
Jamaliah was replying to a supplementary question by Dr Afif Bahardin (PN-Taman Medan) on whether the Selangor government plans to make it mandatory to provide charging points for EV vehicles in new housing development projects.
Jamaliah said state records showed a total of 681 charging stations had been installed in Selangor through the efforts of the government and the private sector.
The state is encouraging the use of EVs and is aiming to provide 1,000 EV charging bays by 2025, said Jamaliah.
"At the same time, local councils in the state such as the Petaling Jaya City Council has been offering free parking for hybrid and electric vehicle users since 2011.
The state may also further incentivise EV adoption this year through local councils by extending free parking to EV users.
