WOLFSBURG: If you want a hotter German hot hatch than look no further than the newly released Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport.
This fire-breathing front-wheel drive machine has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes 296hp and 400Nm of torque.
In case you're wondering, the standard GTI produces 242hp and 370Nm of torque.
Also exclusive to the Clubsport is a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It goes from zero to 100kph under six seconds and is electronically limited to a top speed of 250kph.
In terms of handling, the Clubsport has an upgraded Vehicle Dynamics Manager that now integrates the control of the variable-locking front differential into the system, in addition to the optional adaptive shocks.
VW said this allows the car to respond faster to small steering inputs and eliminates understeer found in regular front-wheel drive vehicles.
The Clubsport's suspension sits lower by 15 millimeters compared to a standard GTI.
If you're taking the Clubsport to the Nürburgring Nordschleife, then there's a driving mode specifically for it called Special.
It includes softer suspension settings than Sport mode because Nürburgring has an undulating surface and a stiffer ride is not ideal.
It's easy to spot the Clubsport with the revised front fascia and honeycomb mesh grille.
It comes standard with five-spoke 18-inch wheels, and at the back, there is a high-gloss black spoiler on the roof.
Dual oval-shaped exhaust pipes are situated on each side of the rear with a diffuser in between.
Inside, the Clubsport comes standard with VW's ArtVelours fabric upholstery, and one has the option for perforated leather. Red stitching is evident on the seats, center armrest, floor mats, and steering wheel.
