DRESDEN: Volkswagen is updating the first model in its all-electric ID series just two and a half years after its market launch.
The compact car ID.3 has been given its first facelift with design tweaks both on the inside and outside, as well as a host of software improvements, the German automotive giant announced today.
Volkswagen, like many other car companies, is trying to also trying to free itself from the reputation of a carbon-emitting, resource-hungry manufacturer with heavy marketing on sustainable and vegan interiors in the ID.3.
Software improvements are set to make controls easier on a now-standard 12-inch touch display for navigation and other controls, while there's also an optional head-up display.
The announcement also comes as VW software company Cariad is rolling out Spotify, TikTok and hundreds more apps to cars in the VW group via a new app store called the "group application store".
The ID.3 marked the start of VW's first large-scale production of electric cars. Production started in November 2019, but the start of sales was then delayed until autumn 2020 - mainly because of problems with software features.
The car is now also being built in Volkswagen's so-called Gläserne Manufaktur factory in Dresden, and is planning on expanding production into its headquarters in Wolfsburg.
The complete changeover from the current to the new model is to take place in Zwickau at the beginning of May, and in Dresden at the end of May.
