WATCH: How difficult is it to get cars into a video game?
By JAY WONG | 05 November 2020LOS ANGELES: It's always exhilarating to find out just how your favourite vehicle might perform in a video game.
But before the real deal goes virtual, there's a great deal of work that's done beforehand.
In one of Donut Media's latest video, it takes the viewer through the development stages in order to get it in virtual form for some on-screen enjoyment.
Codemasters - the developers for the Formula 1 and DIRT video game franchise, allowed a brief-yet-informative look at their development process, namely vehicle selection, modelling and ultimately programming.
Because a chosen vehicle is "virtually" being copied, a tonne of licensing is involved as well as continuous amounts of confirmation.
This is to help ensure that details of a car manufacturer's pride and joy get properly and accurately depicted from the colour right down to the exhaust note, handling characteristics and even structural integrity.
Getting past the corporate side of things, it's time to dive deep into the computing side - particularly three-dimensional (3D) renderings.
The final touch is the way the car is programmed to handle so that it properly depicts the way it's supposed to be in reality.
Although this will vary between titles, it will also depend on how the game's "engine" recreates the vehicle to help bring about the love many of us have developed for certain games.
