Kove 800X GT: Upstart in the house

I have spent enough time on adventure bikes to know that numbers only tell half the story.

The 2026 Kove 800X GT is one of those motorcycles that forces me to rethink what Chinese manufacturers are capable of.

I approached this bike with a fair bit of scepticism, but after putting serious miles on it.

Riding the machine on long highway runs to the twisty roads of Bukit Tinggi and the daily crawl through Kuala Lumpur, I came away genuinely impressed.

Not everything is perfect, but I found myself enjoying it far more than I expected.

The first thing I noticed was the design.

I think Kove has avoided copying the usual European and Japanese adventure bike formula too closely.

Instead, I found the 800X GT has its own identity with sharp body panels, a purposeful front end and a tall stance that looks ready for long-distance touring.

I especially liked the integrated fuel tank design and the slim waist, which made the bike feel smaller than it actually is.

The LED lighting looked modern, although I thought the rear indicators looked just a little bit cheap compared to the rest of the bike.

Build quality surprised me.

I honestly expected a few rough edges but I found most panels fitted together well, the paint finish looked rich, and the switchgear had a reassuring click.

I did notice one or two uneven panel gaps near the side fairings but they were not enough to bother me.

The welding on the frame looked neat and I could not hear any annoying rattles even after spending almost the whole day on less-than-perfect roads.

That's impressive because Malaysian roads are rarely forgiving.

The 800X GT's power comes from a 799cc parallel-twin producing around 95hp and approximately 80Nm of torque.

I never felt like I was short of power.

Instead, I found the engine had a broad spread of torque that made overtaking effortless.

I barely needed to downshift on the highway, and rolling from 100kph to higher speeds happened quickly without feeling dramatic.

I actually wished the exhaust had a little more character because the engine deserved a soundtrack with a bit more emotion.

On the North-South Expressway, I found the bike remarkably stable.

Even cruising at speeds above the legal limit, I felt planted and relaxed.

Crosswinds did not upset the chassis much and I appreciated how well the windscreen directed air over my helmet.

I did notice a slight buffeting around my shoulders, but it wasn't something that made me uncomfortable.

I could easily spend hours in the saddle without complaining.

Then came Bukit Tinggi, where I think the 800X GT really started showing its personality.

I was not expecting such confidence from an adventure bike that weighs at 215kg fully fuelled.

I tipped it into corners and it held its line with surprising accuracy.

I found the steering neutral and predictable, while direction changes felt lighter than I expected.

The engine's torque allowed me too leave it in third gear for many corners without constantly working the gearbox.

I intentionally kept pushing harder with every kilometre, and the bike simply kept encouraging me.

The suspension deserves plenty of credit.

The fully adjustable upside-down forks and rear shock struck an impressive balance between comfort and control.

I found they absorbed broken tarmac beautifully while still giving enough feedback when attacking corners.

Over larger bumps, the rear shock occasionally felt slightly hard but I suspect a few adjustments would sort that out.

I never felt the suspension became overwhelmed, even when I intentionally hit several rough patches mid-corner.

Braking performance also exceeded my expectations.

The twin front discs delivered strong initial bite without being overly aggressive.

I liked how easy it was to modulate braking force entering tighter bends.

The rear brake felt progressive too, helping settle the bike during downhill sections around Bukit Tinggi.

ABS intervention was smooth and rarely intrusive, although I think the front
lever could have offered just a touch more feel.

For daily commuting, I found the 800X GT surprisingly manageable.

Despite its size, the narrow riding position made filtering through traffic easier than I expected.

The clutch action remained light during heavy congestion and the engine never became unbearably hot.

I did find the mirrors slightly wider than ideal, so I had to pay attention squeezing between cars.

What impressed me most was how complete the package felt.

I never got the impression that Kove had simply built a budget adventure bike.

Instead, I felt the company had built a genuinely capable motorcycle first, then priced it aggressively.

There are still small details that could be refined, particularly some plastics and a few finishing touches, but I don't think those shortcomings define the overall experience.

Would I choose the 800X GT over established rivals?

I honestly would not dismiss it anymore.

I came into this ride expecting compromises but I left thinking about where I would take it next.

It may not be perfect, and yes, there are still room for improvement but I genuinely enjoyed every ride I had on it.

For a brand that still earning trust, I believe the 800X GT priced at RM48,888 has done something quite remarkable.
