THE BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro is not the sort of EV that tries to rearrange your idea of a car.
It has no spaceship silhouette, no lounge-on-wheels cabin trick, no front boot to impress your neighbour with at the charging bay.
Instead, it does something more conservative.

It takes the 5 Series formula and electrifies it without throwing away the old posture.
That is both the best and most limiting thing about it.
This is not a clean-sheet electric saloon like BMW’s coming Neue Klasse cars.
The i5 is built on BMW’s CLAR architecture, which also supports petrol and hybrid models.
From the outside, that decision works.
The long nose, set-back cabin and rear-drive stance are all still there.

It looks like a 5 Series, not a battery pack wearing a rounded top hat.
The asking price is RM368,800, or RM392,300 with a five-year warranty and scheduled-servicing package.
It is also BMW Malaysia’s first locally assembled fully electric BMW, which gives the car more weight than just another variant launch.
And weight is impossible to ignore.

On the move
At 5,060mm long, 1,900mm wide and 1,515mm tall, the i5 is longer than some older 7 Series models.
It is a big car, and the tape measure is not exaggerating.
Yet on the move, it does not feel like a large EV trying to hide in a sedan suit.
The rear-mounted motor produces 250kW, or 340PS, with 400Nm of torque in normal driving and up to 430Nm briefly through Sport Boost.
The 0–100kph time is 6.0 seconds.
Quick, yes, but not shocking in a market where some China-brand EVs are already much faster for less money.
The i5’s appeal is how smoothly it serves up its speed.
Driven mostly in Efficient mode, it is calm, quiet and easy to place.

There is enough response for daily use, and the car does not keep nudging you to drive like a hero.
Sport mode wakes it up, while the boost paddle gives a quick extra shove for overtaking.
Rides well, too
The suspension deserves much of the credit.
At 2,120kg, the i5 is no lightweight, but it does a good job of hiding that weight once it is moving.
The battery sits low, helping stability, while the 20-inch staggered Pirelli P Zero tyres — 245-section front and 275-section rear — give the rear axle the footprint needed to deal with instant electric torque.
Adaptive Suspension Professional and Integral Active Steering help too.

Over rumble strips and patchy roads, the car feels controlled without turning hard-edged.
Larger bumps are rounded off cleanly, and the body settles quickly afterwards.
At speed, it feels planted.
Rear-wheel steering helps in tight car parks, where a 5.06-metre sedan can otherwise feel like hard work.
There is also a strong B mode for one-pedal-style driving.

It works well in traffic, though some drivers may prefer the more natural coasting feel in normal drive.
The road manners flatter the car.
The rear seats are less flattering.
Back-seat reality
This is where the shared platform starts sending invoices.
The rear seat is comfortable enough for average-sized adults, but it does not deliver the stretch-out room expected of a 5.06-metre executive sedan.
The raised floor changes the seating posture, so taller passengers will notice their knees and feet sitting higher than ideal.
It is not a bad rear seat.

It is just not the rear seat the exterior size leads you to expect.
The boot follows the same pattern.
It is useful, deep lengthwise and rated at 490 litres, with 40:20:40 split-folding backrests.
But the sedan body and low parcel shelf limit vertical space, and there is no frunk.
Under the bonnet, the space is taken up by electronics and cooling-related components.

Up front, the i5 is easier to praise.
The seats are excellent: supportive, snug without being tight, and well suited to long highway stints.
The driving position still feels BMW-like: low enough, well aligned and easy to settle into.
Loaded cabin
BMW has avoided the usual CKD trap of quietly deleting the good stuff.
The Malaysian car gets Merino leather, carbon fibre trim, four-zone climate control, roller sunblinds, panoramic glass roof, Head-Up Display, BMW Interaction Bar and a 17-speaker, 655W Bowers & Wilkins system.
The Curved Display is sharp, and the Head-Up Display earns its size by keeping speed, navigation and driver-assistance cues easy to read.
The infotainment system is less successful.

BMW gives you many functions, apps and drive-mode cards, but simple adjustments can feel like sorting through a smart TV menu.
The exterior is easier to like from the side than from straight ahead.
In profile, the i5 has the proportions BMW buyers expect: long bonnet, short overhangs, planted stance.
The illuminated grille surround gives the front end presence at night, but lighting up such a distinctive BMW face can feel a little eager.
The rest of the car is clean and expensive-looking, though it lacks one detail that stays with you after you walk away.
That, in a way, sums up the i5.
The i5 is quiet, quick enough and easy to like.

Its problem is packaging, not polish.
Rear space is only fair for a car this size.
The boot is useful rather than generous.
The missing frunk is a reminder that this car was designed to serve more than one powertrain future.
Still a BMW
The i5 does not feel like BMW’s final word on the electric sedan.
That job will fall to the Neue Klasse cars.
Some buyers will be fine with that trade.
They do not want the strangest EV.
They want a premium electric sedan that drives well, goes the distance, and still feels like a 5 Series.
