2016 LA Auto Show: Honda hints at cabin of the future

LOS ANGELES: As part of its LA Auto Show presentation, Honda's premium sub-brand Acura has taken the wraps off the Acura Precision Cockpit, a conceptual cabin that blends old-world craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology and which could be a reality in the NSX before decade's end.

The convergence between cars and computers continues apace and with it so do the challenges automakers face in integrating new features, technologies and innovations into the cockpits of tomorrow in a way that won't alienate or confuse the drivers of today.

The Acura Precision Cockpit, presented in "near-production" form is one of the clearest indications yet that the "trackpad style" input that BMW and Mercedes have been developing for several years, is set to become the standard way to access an ever growing list of functions without distraction.

Honda has placed a touchpad where the gearshift would traditionally be located. This is, according to the company, because a dashboard-mounted touchscreen could actually be distracting - the driver needs to look across to use it - whereas all drivers are used to reaching down and across to change gear.

Honda also claims this touchpad is accurate and can exactly map individual finger positions.

"Absolute positioning transforms the touchpad experience, making it personal, intuitive and particularly well-suited for premium, driver-centric performance machines," said Dave Marek, Acura's executive creative director.

Like Audi, Mercedes and VW, Honda is also planning to ditch traditional dials in favour of multi-function screens. In the concept, the instrument binnacle (usually home to the speedometer) boasts a 12.3-inch display that shows the most critical information at any moment, whether it's how autonomous systems are functioning, the route to follow when using satellite navigation, or engine performance and remaining power reserves if the car's running in electric mode.

This display is complemented by a second screen mounted in the centre of the cockpit for entertainment and communication features. This display also offers a glimpse at the new in-car operating system the company is developing based on Android which will make accessing information, content and apps simple, safe and intuitive.

But away from the cutting-edge tech, the cockpit is a haven of simple luxury. Finished in wood, Alcantara, leather and brushed metal the overall effect is to make driver and passengers feel comfortable and confident.
