TOYOTA CITY: Toyota has launched the hydrogen-powered "Fine-Comfort Ride" ahead of the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show next week.

The concept car is Toyota's way of exploring further zero emissions possibilities for fuel cell vehicles

The Fine-Comfort Ride proposes "a new form of the premium saloon" by employing a flexible layout unique to electric-powered vehicles and a large amount of available electric power using hydrogen as an energy source.

According to Toyota, the car can achieve a cruising range of 1,000km (JC08 test cycle), with a motor built into each wheel. No performance figures were released.

The car promises a practical cruising range and refuelling is said to take just three minutes. It adopts a diamond-shaped cabin that narrows towards the rear, while being wider in all dimensions from the front to the centre of the vehicle, maximising the space of the second row seats and for aerodynamic performance.

The wheels are positioned at the far corners of the vehicle, and uses an underboy cover to achieve high running stability and quietness as befits a premium sedan.

Cabin design is based on the theme of being wrapped comfortably. In this regard, the seats allow for flexible adjustment according to posture, and the displays allow the driver and passengers to freely access information. The six-seater comprises four individual seats and a bench seat in third row. The seat layout can be flexibly adjusted, so Fine-Comfort Ride can be used as individual space or as a communication space for individuals.

For a futuristic addition, the windows also double as infotainment screens with graphics and content projected on to them.

Toyota is also promoting another hydrogen-fuelled concept in the form of the Sora bus. It is able to fit 79 occupants (22 seated, 56 standing and a driver). The bus is expected to go into series production in 2018, with over 100 units reserved for Tokyo ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Toyota will display both concepts at Tokyo Big Sight here during the 45th Tokyo Motor Show from Oct 25-Nov 5.
