By THOMAS HUONG | 2 April 2018

The 2018 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) is expected to draw more than 1.6 million visitors and see some 40,000 orders for vehicles.

Organised by Grand Prix International PLC, the 12-day motor show, is held from March 28 to April 8, 2018 at Challenger Hall 1 – 3, Impact Muang Thong Thani.

It is open from 12 noon till 10pm on weekdays, and from 11am till 10pm on weekends and public holidays.

Dr Prachin Eamlumnow, who is the CEO of Grand Prix International and the organising chairman of the motor show, noted that over the years, the Bangkok International Motor Show had consistently drew high numbers of visitors.

"It is the top motor show in Asean, and is certified by OICA (Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles) and listed on the global motor show calendar," said the 75-year-old Dr Prachin.

Since 1992, the annual motor show has attracted between 1.59 and 2.1 million visitors at each edition.

In the last five editions, it drew 1.6 to 1.78 million visitors.

Dr Prachin said the booth designs and construction materials at the Bangkok Motor Show are of international standards.

"We are among the top five in the world when it comes to the construction and design of motor shows."

Last year, a total of 36,093 vehicles were booked at the motor show, consisting of 31,031 passenger cars, 4,043 motorcycles and 1,019 electric sub-compact commercial vehicles.

Dr Prachin pointed out that Mercedes-Benz saw 2,090 bookings at the 2017 edition, which contributed significantly to the German premium marque's record Thai sales of 14,484 vehicles last year.

For the 2019 Bangkok International Motor Show, Dr Prachin says there are "big celebratory plans" in store.

"We will enter the Guinness World Records as the motor show with the highest numbers of pretty models. It is every man's dream to be like Hugh Hefner (the late founder of Playboy magazine); to be with beautiful women and cars," he grinned.

He reiterated that the Bangkok International Motor Show has been a significant contributor to the Thai and Asean automotive industry.

"We have the highest visitor numbers in the world. Even the Tokyo Motor Show, which used to draw well over a million visitors, saw the number of visitors dropping to 771,200 at the 2017 edition."

Meanwhile, Grand Prix International will organise the inaugural 2018 Myanmar International Motor Show in Yangon, to be held from July 20 to 29.
