2017 Tokyo Motor Show: What to expect

By CARSIFU | 27 September 2017

TOKYO: This year's Tokyo Motor Show is due to open its doors on Oct 28 to the public at the Tokyo Big Sight located in the capital's Ariake waterfront area, under the theme - Beyond the Motor.

The organisers said this year's 45th show will be the starting point for further explorations on the future of mobility and will go beyond the industry's borders to integrate many concepts and technologies.

The show will have a number of exhibits that will help visitors explore the future possibilities and innovations of mobility at the interactive Tokyo Connected Lab showcase.

Visitors will get a chance to share their ideas on the future of mobility based on six concepts: social good; universal; move;  drive; private; and sharing.

The fully interactive event will be reflected through 360-degree visual projection inside a giant dome (holding up to 300 people at a time), which will constantly change as a result of participants’ input via simulation and graphics.

At the Maze exhibit, 30 visitors at a time to the showcase will be able to investigate the possibilities of what people will be able to do when cars, drivers and the entire city's infrastructure have been connected as they drive their own connected cars with the use of 30 sets of interconnected PlayStation VR (virtual reality) systems.

A series of talk sessions will also be organised during The Meet Up, where it promotes the exchanging of ideas on the future of mobility and the new opportunities it could bring.

From the first day the show opens to the general public on Oct 28, free shuttle-bus service and universal-design taxis will provide transportation between Tokyo Big Sight and the test-drive/ride venues (a distance of about 1.5 km).

The test-drive and test-ride programs at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show will move from their previous Tokyo Big Sight venue to various new venues in the neighboring Rinkai Fukutoshin area and will also increase in number.

Visitors will be able to enjoy many different driving/riding experiences, from “personal” and “micro” to “next-generation” and “heavy-duty.”
