YONG PENG: At least 80% of frontliners in the public transport sector must be vaccinated by Oct 31, according to the target set by the Transport Ministry.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said since kicking off the Covid-19 vaccination programme for the maritime industry on June 25, about 10,000 port and maritime workers had been inoculated.“About 22,000 doses have also been given to those working in the aviation industry at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The process is still ongoing.

“Similarly, those working in the rail sector such as the Light Rail Transit, Mass Rapid Transit, monorail and bus drivers under the Prasarana Malaysia Bhd umbrella are also in the process of receiving their vaccinations.

“Also not forgetting licenced taxi and e-hailing drivers. We are in the midst of identifying those who have yet to be vaccinated to see how we can further assist them,” he said.

Dr Wee said the names of about 120,000 licensed taxi and e-hailing drivers in the country had been submitted to the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force to hasten the vaccination process.

“We want to get it done as soon as possible because they are considered front line workers. The same goes for those in the logistics sector.

“Those in the logistics sector can submit the list of names to us and we will try to help them get vaccinated at vaccination centres or under the Public-Private Partnership Industrial Covid-19 Immunisation Programme,” he said.

Separately, Dr Wee, who is also Ayer Hitam MP, said his constituency would keep giving food aid to those in need, including stocking up supplies at food banks in the area.
