A 1961 Bentley is the latest cherished car to get an electric rebirth

LONDON: Classic car electrification specialist Lunaz has launched what it calls "the world's first electric classic Bentley" for fans of the brand who want to boost their green credentials.

The electric-powered 1961 Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur looks just the same as the original version which is driven by a petrol-guzzling 6.2-litre V8 engine.

The petrol unit has given way to a 80-kWh battery pack which offers a range of more than 380km and a respectable claimed zero to 100kph time of less than five seconds.

The first car has recently rolled off the production line and Lunaz says its owner plans to drive the car daily.

The limited-edition Bentley is the latest classic to be added to the portfolio of the British company and Lunaz says it is moving to a larger factory in response to a global need for exclusive electric classics.

Lunaz said electrification offers an ideal way of making classic cars future-proof without compromising on the performance and looks of the original.

Like the regular S2 Continental, the electric version is aimed at wealthy buyers who will need to part with upwards of a cool £350,000 (nearly RM2mil) for the pleasure of owning one.

Lunaz said it will offer electrified Bentley Continental S1, S2 and S3 models in two-door and four-door versions along with rare convertible examples.

Before the electric motor is implanted in a cherished donor car, each Lunaz Bentley is subject to bare-metal restoration process. The rejig includes uprated suspension, brakes and the addition of power-steering and air-conditioning.

Inside, a new infotainment screen blends in discreetly to provide navigation and modern features like Apple CarPlay. The walnut fittings and leather seats in the cabin are also hand-restored.

Previous Lunaz electrified classics include an emission-free version of the opulent Rolls-Royce Phantom V, the Jaguar XK 120 sports car and the Mark 1 version of the Range Rover.
