Acura Type S to make a return to US and Canada

TOKYO: Acura, Honda's luxury-performance brand in Canada and the US, has marked the start of the return of its Type S performance variants with the introduction of the Type S Concept after a decade-long hiatus.

The Type S will be re-introduced with two variants for choice over the next two years and has been characterized by its wide track and low stance, with an expansive hood that stretches forward from the A-pillars.

At the front, the concept showcases its next-generation four-lamp Jewel Eye LED headlights flanking the open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille while sporting the 'Chicane' daytime running lights and taillights inspired from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype race car that double as turn signals.

Its large centre and side intakes suggest high needs for cooling of its engine and brakes.

A sharp and distinctive tail features an upswept decklid with a sharply creased centerline (drawn from the hood) and integrated forged carbon spoiler while the 'Chicane' LED taillights, a large rear diffuser and quad chrome exhaust outlets complete the look.

In addition to the rear decklid spoiler, forged carbon – created by bonding layers of carbon on top of one another to exceed the strength of traditional interwoven carbon – is applied to the front and rear splitters, side sills, rear decklid spoiler and multi-spoke 21-inch wheels.

For grip, the wheels have been fitted with 285mm-wide tyres that partially hide the Brembo four-piston callipers and discs.

The concept has been painted over by a bespoke "Double Apex Blue Pearl" paint with Nano pigments and a colour-infused clear coat to enhance its lustre and brilliance.

The concept was conceived by the Acura Design Studio in California and was led by executive creative director Dave Marek and chief designer Ben Davidson.
