After XC40 Recharge, Volvo's second EV to come out in March 2021

GOTHENBURG: Volvo will be rolling out its second electric vehicle on March 2 next year.

The as-yet unnamed model will be built based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), the same platform being used on the XC40 Recharge, Volvo's first SUV. CMA is also used for the Polestar 2 electric car.

In a recent interview with Automotive News Europe, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the new model would feature a "more streamlined body" than the XC40 Recharge, suggesting it could take on a coupe look.

"We will keep you a bit in the dark until we show the car, but I promise you it will be a very good-looking car," he said.

Like Mercedes-Benz latest gameplan, Volvo wants to focus on making higher-priced cars in the belief that it's the route to profitability. So the new model is part of the cog that fits into Volvo's current direction.

Volvo had previously said it aims to introduce an all-electric vehicle each year between 2019 and 2025. It got the ball rolling with the XC40 Recharge last year but is skipping 2020, which can be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic that has turned the world upside down.
