KUALA LUMPUR: The first-of-its-kind car design competition, the Asian Compact Sedan Design Challenge 2023”(ACSDC 2023) in Malaysia drew 93 entries from 7 countries for its inaugural run.

The ACSDC 2023 is a sedan design challenge open to professional and student designers within Asia, co-organised by Perodua and the Malaysia Design Council (MRM).

“The number of entries and their countries of origins are encouraging as Perodua’s and MRM’s presence outside Malaysia is limited,” Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Perodua president and CEO said.

The 93 entries are from Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Iran, Japan, India and Malaysia.

For the professional category, Kenny Chan from Malaysia was named champion of the ACSDC 2023 competition with his “Payung” concept car.

Chief of judges, Muhamad Zamuren Musa said, "The design proportion show dynamic with a fastback silhouette, strong and stable body character makes the car well-balanced. The significant of details and other creative elements of style make the car among the best of all participants."

Philip Samuel Tandio from Indonesia is the 1st runner up with his “Out Ride” concept, while Muhammad Izhar Che Shukarno’s “Fastback” was named second runner up.

Bryan Teh Yea Quan from Asia Pacific University (APU), Malaysia was crowned champion of the student category with his unique interpretation of a sporty sedan.

Alfred Han Wen Hao from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Malaysia as the first runner up, and Muhammad Amin Othman from UniversitiTeknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia as the second runner up.

“For Perodua, this competition gives us insights on what a sedan is as definition and perception of this type of vehicle differ from one country to the next. Malaysians see it as a practical vehicle while other countries may see it more of a status symbol, and by having this competition, we can see where we can merge the two ideas into one,” added Zainal.

“This competition not only encourages designers to test their talents but also exposes them to different design philosophies from other parts of the world,” said MRM’s director, Husaini Ismail.
