Audi starts production of electric motors for PPE in Hungary

INGOLSTADT: Audi has started production of electric motors for the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) at its plant in Gyor, Hungary.

The newly developed electric motors will be used in the Audi Q6 e-tron series, with production of the first fully electric Audi model set to begin at the Ingolstadt headquarters later this year.

The Gyor plant, which already produces stators and transmission components, has a new 15,000-square-metre production area for the electric motors.

Around 700 employees will work in three shifts to produce up to 2,000 electric motors per day for the PPE.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said that Gyor is "predestined" for the production of these electric motors due to the site's experience in building electric drive systems.

The Gyor plant also produces the drive system for the Q8 e-tron and is setting up an additional production area for electric motors used in vehicles based on the MEBeco (modular electric drive toolkit) platform.

The site supplies both Audi and Porsche.

Audi has installed three new production lines for the electric motors, with the stator production line having 28 work steps and the transmission component production line having 15.

The assembly of one axle alone requires 190 individual steps. The Gyor plant has been net carbon neutral since 2020 and has Europe's largest roof-mounted photovoltaic system.

To transport the electric motors from Gyor to Ingolstadt in a net carbon neutral manner, Audi is relying on the transport and logistics company DB Cargo.

The Gyor plant has been in operation for 30 years and is the world's largest powertrain plant.

It is also the first manufacturer in Hungary to produce premium cars. Audi Hungaria has invested around €12 billion (RM61bil) since its foundation and employs 12,000 people.
