Audi's second-gen digital OLED tech is as smart as can be

INGOLSTADT: The Audi Q6 e-tron is introducing a world-first active digital light signature, transforming automotive light design and car-to-X communication.

With second-generation digital OLED rear lights, the Q6 e-tron offers intelligent displays that communicate with other road users through exterior lights.

Customers can now select digital light signatures for the Matrix LED headlights and digital OLED rear lights, and can book them on demand.

This innovation marks a new chapter in Audi's electromobility and lighting technology, showcasing distinctive design and aesthetics.

The Q6 e-tron also sets new standards in personalisation, with eight optional digital light signatures in the Matrix LED headlights and digital OLED rear lights 2.0. Customers can buy digital light signatures after purchasing their car.

In 2016, Audi introduced digital OLED technology in the TT RS, incorporating organic LEDs for rear light technology.

These semiconductor-based surface light sources generate high contrast, homogeneity, and adjustable brightness.

In 2020, Audi Q5 customers could select an individual rear light signature, becoming the first automotive manufacturer to modify the rear light signature digitally.

In 2022, the Audi A8 became standard with digital OLED rear lights, allowing software to control each rear light panel and segment individually.

The next generation of digital OLEDs in the Audi Q6 e-tron expands the range of functions and design freedom while improving road safety.

The Q6 e-tron's rear lights have 60 segments per panel, allowing for car-to-X communication and a steady increase in segment number. This innovative technology creates a unique rear light design with high contrast and efficiency, breaking down design boundaries between two- and three-dimensionality.

Audi has revolutionised the front of the car with 70 digital daytime running lights and light modules, creating greater design clarity. The LEDs are transparent 3D objects, with a metalized trim surrounding them.

The Q6 e-tron now includes a communication light, which warns other road users of accidents and breakdowns. The communication light uses data from the swarm and includes warning symbols for emergency assist, rear-end collision alert signal, hazard warning lights, emergency calls, roadside assistance calls and emergency brake lights. It also extends the safety concept to other road users, ensuring a safe approach for all.
