Autobacs Super GT Series to make Malaysian comeback in 2025
By JAY WONG | 10 September 2024PUTRAJAYA: After an 11-year hiatus, the 2025 Autobacs Super GT Series is set to return to Malaysia at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from June 27 to 28, 2025.
Promoted by Haro Sports and Entertainment, the company expects to attract more than 80,000 spectators and fans to the two-day event of the third round of the eight-round race series .
Malaysia is the only round to be held outside of Japan and ticket sales will be announced soon.
The official signing ceremony was held at Tourism Malaysia in Putrajaya and was attended by Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan; Haro Sports & Entertainment managing partner Fahrizal Hasan and GT Association (GTA) president and chief executive officer Masaaki Bandoh.
The race will be held at the SIC for the next three years (2025-2027) as outlined in the agreement signed today between Haro Sports and Entertainment as the rights holder and promoter for the Malaysian round of the Super GT and the GT Association (GTA) as the rights holders for Super GT.
The opening race in 2025 will kick off at the Okayama International Circuit from April 12-13 before moving to Fuji Speedway from May 3-4 and Malaysia.
Racing will continue with Round Four at Fuji Speedway (Aug 2-3) once more and will move on to the Suzuka Circuit (Aug 23-24).
The final three rounds will be held at Sportsland Sugo (Sept 20-21), Autopolis International Racing Course (Oct 18-19) and Mobility Resort Motegi (Nov 1-2).
“I am deeply honoured that the GTA, the teams and drivers have once again unanimously agreed to return to Malaysia,” said Fahrizal.
Fahrizal added that due to the attractiveness of the race globally, it will not only be heavily promoted locally but also throughout the Asian region and beyond.
The race will feature its top manufacturers and drivers from Japan competing in the GT500 (Toyota, Honda and Nissan) and GT300 (Subaru and Lexus) Classes.
The SIC hosted the first away race for the race series in 2000 and 2001 - previously known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Championship.
Following two exhibition races, Malaysia was officially included as a full-fledged championship round in 2002 where it played host to Super GT’s overseas rounds until 2013.
The race was supposed to have returned to Malaysia in 2020 but was unfortunately cancelled due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
