Back to the future with DeLorean's new gullwing electric flagship

HOUSTON: The DMC DeLorean is one of the world's most famous cars next to James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 and now it's back on the block as a gullwing battery-electric sportster called Alpha 5.

The spaceship-style name suits this rakish creation which is very much a homage to the angular 1980s original although at first glance it looks nothing like it.

The svelte form of the Alpha 5 is a long way from the wedge-shaped stainless-steel DMC of yore but the tail-lights and rear black slats are a nod to the first car along with the chunky louvres over the rear windows.

The new Alpha 5 comes from Giorgietto Giugiaro's Italian styling house and guess what? The maestro designed the first DMC too. The new car will debut at Pebble Beach in August before going into production in 2024.

The US company's mission statement on its website has Star Trek-style boldness to it too: "Designed with purpose. DeLorean has confidence and a compelling presence. We will continue to apply our rebellious DNA to shape our vehicles and constantly push the boundaries of what's possible."

The first DeLorean gained fame as the automotive star of the "Back to the Future" film franchise, where the car plays an imaginary time travel machine using a so-called flux capacitor.

That DMC needed to travel at 142kph in order to initiate time travel and for this reason only 88 of the new Alpha 5 will go on sale.

The new car is no time traveller but performance should be in the supercar league, with sub four-second acceleration from zero to 100 kph. Key technical details are still under wraps.

Former Tesla top executive Joost de Vries is behind the project. His DeLorean Motor Company based near here follows on from British engineer Stephen Wynne, who gained the rights to the original company name and branding in 1995.

Aimed at the kind of customer who would otherwise buy a Porsche Taycan, the Alpha 5 is bigger and longer at almost five metres from bumper to bumper. At two metres, it is also impressively wide and has four very comfortable seats.
