BMW caught off guard by strong M5 Touring demand

MUNICH: BMW has increased production for the M5 Touring (wagon to you and me) due to unexpectedly high demand, according to bmwblog.

BMW M vice president (customer, brand, and sales) Sylvia Neubauer told bmwblog, "Originally, our plan was to have two-thirds of the production over the entire (M5) lifecycle as a sedan and one-third as a Touring. We now see that there’s more demand for the sedan, so we’ve increased production there. But there’s even more demand for the Touring. So the increase on the Touring is much higher.”

Neubauer revealed to bmwblog that production of the M5 Sedan and its Touring counterpart is split evenly at 50:50 at the moment.

The new M5 Touring celebrated its world premiere at Monterey Car Week in California, United States in mid-August 2024.

In November 2024, four months after the start of production for the M5 Sedan, series production of the new M5 Touring got underway at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, Germany.

It is the third current BMW M vehicle to feature an M HYBRID drive train in which a high-rpm V8 power train is complemented by an e-drive.

Together, the two propulsion systems deliver a peak performance of 535 kW/727hp and a maximum torque of 1,000Nm.

Power transfer via the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the Active M Differential and the M-specific chassis technology are all tuned precisely to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

The chassis technology of the M5 Touring comprises a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle.

Standard specification also includes adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering.

The standard-fitted M Compound brakes provide the requisite stopping power, while the M light-alloy wheels (front: 20 inches; rear: 21 inches) are fitted as standard with high-performance tyres.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new M5 Touring has a newly designed M leather steering wheel, M multifunction seats, M-specific readouts on the BMW Curved Display and the standard BMW Head-Up Display.

There are also Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone automatic climate control, M-specific interior lighting with Welcome Animation and a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System.

Standard specification for driver assistance systems includes front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system.

The load capacity of the new M5 Touring can be expanded from 500 to a maximum of 1,630 litres.

The standard-fitted Comfort Access and automatic tailgate operation enable easy loading and unloading.

The maximum trailer load for the optional trailer coupling is 2,000kg.
