By JAY WONG | 5 August 2023

SEPANG: BMW Group Malaysia has introduced the all-electric and all-wheel-driven iX (I20) M60 alongside two variants of the second-generation M2 (G87) compact high-performance coupe.

The iX is priced at RM630,800 while the M2 and M2 with Pro Package are priced on-the-road without insurance at RM598,800 and RM642,800 respectively.

Both iX and M2 variants are covered by a five-year unlimited mileage warranty with Free Scheduled Service Programme which includes an eight-year or 160,000km Battery Warranty (whichever comes first), access to BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline and BMW Services Online before providing a BMW Privileges Card for new owners.

The iX comes in six standard colour options of Mineral White, Alpine White Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, Sophisto Grey Metallic with Brilliant Effect, Phytonic Blue Metallic, and Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic while Individual Storm Bay Metallic and Aventurine Red Metallic are available as an optional extra.

Inside, owners may choose between Interior Design Atelier in Mocha or Black, or the Interior Design Suite in Amido or Castanea.

Powered by a 111.5kWh lithium-ion battery situated within the floor between the front and rear axles, the two electric motors - mounted on each axle to provide an all-wheel-drive (AWD) and an output of 455kW (619hp) and 1,100Nm of torque.

The iX M60 is able to sprint from 0 to 100kph in 3.8 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 250kph - all thanks to the inclusion of Launch Control and an uber-low drag coefficient of just 0.26Cd (the closer to 0 the better) while providing up to 561km (WLTP) of range.

The AWD system's two independent current-energised synchronous electric motors have been designed to operate without the use of rare earth metals and can rely solely on either the front or rear axle for propulsion, depending on the driving situation.

A near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology has been fitted in tandem with the AWD system for the first time to help improve traction and stability.

While being integrated into the motor management system, it is said to produce precise and high-speed corrective inputs, thereby enabling the vehicle to make effortless progress at all times, even in adverse weather and road conditions.

The battery can be charged using a 195kW DC (Direct Current) fast charger, taking it from 0% to 80% in about 35 minutes while a 22kW AC Wallbox Charger does the deed in about 5.5 hours or 11 hours when using an 11kW AC Wallbox Charger when charging from 0% to 100%.

Additionally, new owners of the iX M60 will also be able to enjoy charging access at over 1,000 charging facilities nationwide through major local electric vehicle charging partners with BMW Group Malaysia.

Utilising an aluminium spaceframe concept together with a carbon cage with carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the roof, side and rear sections, the combination provides high torsional rigidity before optimising its weight distribution to a 50/50 split between the front and rear.

The iX rolls on 22-inch BMW Individual M aerodynamic wheels in 3D-polished 1023 bicolour titanium bronze that allows the M Sport performance brake system to be seen while hiding its adaptive two-axle air suspension with M-specific tuning and components as well as the Integral Active Steering system.

Meanwhile, the model badge is available exclusively in High Gloss Black or Titanium Bronze.

For entertainment, the iX M60 uses a 1,615-watt Bower and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system with “True Sound” technology that powers 30 speakers with two diamond tweeters and fully active speaker control for the 3D surround sound while featuring embellishers in brushed stainless steel with etched branding and light staging.

Speakers can also be found within the head restraints of each front seat for that True Surround experience while the inclusion of Bass Performance Plus places two subwoofers under the second-row seats before providing a seven-band equaliser, ShyTech and audio cloth implementation for its mid-range speakers.

Meanwhile, the M2 high-performance coupe is available in five colour options of Zandvoort Blue, Alpine White, Brooklyn Grey, Black Sapphire and Toronto Red before adding an M High-gloss Shadowline.

The upholstery options include Leather Vernasca in Black with exclusive highlight, Leather Vernasca in Black with Blue contrast stitching and Leather Vernasca in Cognac with décor stitching.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 3.0-litre (2,993cc) S58B30T0 inline-six direct-injected aluminium engine producing 460hp at 6,250rpm and 550Nm of torque from 2,600 to 5,950rpm before red-lining at 7,000rpm.

The car also gets an eight-speed Steptronic Sports transmission, an Active M Differential in the rear axle and power delivery can be further tailored by the M Drive Professional system.

This allows the M2 to sprint from 0 to 100kph in 4.1 seconds before reaching a limited 250kph - all thanks to key optimisations which include a new lightweight crankshaft and racetrack-designed oil supply and cooling system.

An M Driver's Package is available as an optional extra to extend its terminal velocity to 285kph and can be retrofitted at any authorised BMW dealership.

The chassis sits on weight-saving aluminium suspension components consisting of front double-joint spring struts and a rear multi-link setup that have been paired with an Adaptive M Suspension.

The front 19-inch and rear 20-inch M double-spoked lightweight alloys in 930 M Bicolour allow the six-piston blue performance M brake callipers to peek through.

The M2 with Pro Package uses the same wheels, only it's now in Black while partially obscuring the gloss-red M Compound Brakes.

Externally, the M2, with its flared wheel arches and gaping square-like intakes, gets fitted with a pair of Adaptive LED headlights with High-beam Assistant that flanks the unframed kidney grilles with horizontal slats that are accompanied by side skirts, rear spoiler lip, rear diffuser and M twin-tailpipes.

The M2 with Pro Package gets an exclusive list of extended content that includes M Carbon Roof and M Lights Shadowline.

The two displays make up the BMW Curved Display which houses the latest-generation BMW M iDrive system that uses the BMW Operating System 8 to provide drivers with user-configurable widgets and access to real-time information.

While the Control Display provides Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity as well as two USB ports and Remote Software Upgrade for over-the-air updating purposes, front passengers get seated in powered M Sport seats with illuminated M logos on the headrests and powered side bolsters for lateral support while cornering hard.

The interior continues to be furnished with an M leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle-shifters, M Anthracite headliner, Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite M Interior Trim, Setup and M Mode buttons on the centre console and a heads-up display for the first time with M specific design and M font colours.
