CYBERJAYA: What is BMW Group Malaysia up to lately? Well, come Feb 22, it will preview the 8 Series Coupe prototype in Kuala Lumpur ahead of its global launch later this year.

It didn't state outright that the 8 Series would be previewed but it's a no-brainer based on the teaser image that accompanied the short press statement. It bears an uncanny resemblance to the revived model. BMW said it would announce more details soon.

These are the marketing puff from the German car maker: "On Thursday, 22nd February 2018, BMW Malaysia will be sharing its vision of luxury with the city of Kuala Lumpur. The experience will bring an emotionality defined by inspirational aesthetics as well as the joy of driving with the experience of freedom and self-determined individuality."

CarSifu was at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show where BMW introduced the concept vehicle. Since then, development of the car has been progressing rapidly.

The last we heard, a close-to-series prototype was undergoing intensive testing on a high-speed proving ground in Aprilia, Italy.

The new 8 Series Coupe is being developed parallel to the M8 and the M8 GTE racing car.

The 8 Series is a two-door coupe version based on the 7 Series and has exterior design features in common with the 6 Series. A convertible version will be offered as well. It is meant to go up against the Bentley Continental GT and Mercedes-Benz S-class Coupe.
