BMW has been jumping on the bandwagon with stretched versions of the X1, 3 Series, 5 Series and now there's a 1 Series Sedan, which was launched in Shanghai recently. The Mercedes CLA fighter is the newest entry to the compact premium vehicle segment that is seeing big potential in China. BMW makes cars for that country through a joint venture with Brilliance Automotive.
There is a choice of three turbocharged power units: a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder (231hp/350Nm) engine; another 2.0-litre engine (192hp/280Nm); and a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder power unit (136hp/220Nm).
The BMW 1 Series Sedan was developed at BMW headquarters in Munich with the support of Chinese engineers. The vehicle concept, and equipment are geared towards the specific requirements of modern target groups in China as well as the road and traffic conditions there.
With its notchback body in characteristic three-box design, the new model reflects the style preferred by Chinese customers. The 1 Series hatch is also offered in China.
Short overhangs, a long engine compartment lid, a passenger cell that is set back and a long wheelbase of 2,670mm give the 1 Series Sedan an elongated, sporty look.
The hallmark brand features of the front section include the wide radiator grille, large air inlets and twin circular headlights with state-of-the-art LED technology.
The rear sports a model-specific design dominated by horizontal lines which underscore the vehicle’s width and supreme road holding. The rear lights protruding far into the side section to form a characteristic L shape to underscore the car’s sturdy appearance.
