BMW says V8 engines are here to stay, targets US and Middle-East markets

MUNICH: BMW plans to continue offering V8 engines in select markets despite industry trends toward downsizing and electrification, according to development head Frank Weber.
In an interview with Automotive News, Weber stated, “V8s are here to stay. We will continue to offer V8s.” He noted that although downsized hybrid inline-six powertrains deliver similar acceleration and performance, buyers in the United States and Middle East are more interested in the smoothness, sound, and overall feel a V8 can provide.
BMW’s decision reflects regional differences in emissions regulations. In the US and Middle East, standards are looser than in Europe, where manufacturers have shifted to smaller engine configurations.
For example, the 760i is not offered in the European Union unless it is the higher-priced, armoured 7 Series Protection variant.
This divergence highlights BMW’s strategy of tailoring powertrain options to the regulatory environments and consumer preferences of each market.
Many automakers have replaced larger engines with smaller, more efficient units to reduce costs and meet stricter emissions standards.
Not BMW. The company is expected to equip upcoming models — including the next-generation X5 and possibly refreshed X6 and X7 SUVs — with its traditional twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine in markets that value the performance characteristics of larger powerplants.
In contrast, European models increasingly feature three-cylinder engines and other downsized options.
BMW’s stance differs from moves by other manufacturers, such as Stellantis, which replaced its larger HEMI V8 with a smaller twin-turbo inline-six, a change that sparked mixed reactions among performance enthusiasts.
In addition to retaining V8 powertrains for key markets, BMW continues to invest in electrification.
The automaker recently introduced hybrid performance applications in models like the M5 and is working to extend the range of its electric vehicles with the Neue Klasse platform.
BMW also plans to maintain diesel options in some European markets, where sales are still strong.
The Munich automaker is also continuing to invest in hydrogen fuel cell technology, although widespread adoption awaits further development of necessary infrastructure.
