BERLIN: BMW has announced the release of 99 limited edition M850i Gran Coupés, featuring artwork by US pop artist Jeff Koons.

The 8 X Jeff Koons will first be unveiled at the Frieze art fair in Los Angeles.

Blue, yellow and silver are the dominant colours in the vehicle's comic-style paintjob.

Lines and geometric shapes adorn the body, interspersed with elements such a cartoon "POP!" symbol, drawn wind vortices or a stylized explosion at the rear.

Implementing the artist's vision in 11 colours on sheet metal requires more than 200 hours of manual work, BMW says, meaning only four cars can be produced each week.

The Gran Coupé will be made in Bavaria, with worldwide deliveries starting in May, according to the company.

For BMW head Oliver Zipse, the 8 X Jeff Koons is the brand's most extensive design project yet.

The comic style continues in the car's multi-coloured interior, with seats in striking red and blue, resembling Spiderman's costume.

Each individual vehicle comes with a certificate signed by Jeff Koons and Oliver Zipse. The bezel of the cup holder is also adorned with the artist's signature.

Sound like a good investment? Maybe.

After all, Jeff Koons is one of the most expensive artists alive.

Two years ago, his "Balloon Rabbit" sculpture was sold at auction in New York for just under US$91.1 million (RM381mil). Compared to that, the BMW coupe's price tag, of €350,000 (RM1.7mil), seems like a bargain.
