The Leipzig facility, which ceased production of the BMW i3, now produces four models across three drive types for two brands on a single line: the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (including a plug-in hybrid variant), BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, and both the electric and combustion versions of the MINI Countryman.
The MINI Countryman Electric is available in two variants: the 204 hp Countryman E and the 313 hp all-wheel-drive Countryman SE ALL4, both boasting zero emissions.
To accommodate the production of up to 350,000 units annually, a significant increase from previous capacities, Leipzig's plant has undergone extensive upgrades since 2018, with improvements to its bodyshop, paintshop, assembly, and logistics.
The introduction of the electric Countryman aligns with BMW's strategy to increase production flexibility and respond swiftly to market demand, including a higher proportion of electric vehicles.
This strategy has also led to the creation of up to 900 new jobs in vehicle production, with the plant's workforce expected to reach around 7,000 by the end of 2024.
Additionally, the Leipzig plant has expanded its role in BMW's electrification efforts by taking on the complete production process for the Gen 5 high-voltage batteries used in the MINI Countryman Electric.
This expansion includes cell coating, module production, and battery assembly, supporting the plant's transformation towards e-mobility and making it a key player in BMW's electrification strategy.
The plant's e-component production, which also supplies other BMW models, now employs around 1,000 people.
At launch, the fully electric MINI Countryman comes in three additional body colours: British Racing Green, Chili Red and Blazing Blue – and with MINI’s trademark contrast roof, if desired.
