Brabus tunes into a new frequency

BOTTROP (Germany): The German car tuner that for 40 years has been taking warm Mercedes and making them red hot will be showing off something very different at this year's Geneva motor show.

It doesn't mean that when the show opens to the public that the company's stand won't be bristling with potent new cars, but it does mean that alongside carbon clad coupés and convertibles there are going to be a number of vans with the same distinctive B emblem on the radiator grille that until now has been all about horsepower.

"In a lot of cities you're now more likely to be sitting in a traffic jam than you are actually driving," explains Sven Gramm, the company's head of communications of this apparent departure. "So, a lot of people want to relax and work in their cars instead."

The demand among Brabus clients has become so great that the company is branching out with a dedicated business - Brabus Business - that tunes vehicles for productivity rather than performance. That could be something as simple as a Mercedes G-Class SUV with wi-fi and foldaway tables or it could be a Mercedes Sprinter van.

That might sound less than glamourous, but the resulting vehicle is closer to a VIP lounge on wheels than it is to a minibus with oversized alloy wheels. "A standard Sprinter is for nine people maximum, but ours is for four people maximum," says Gramm.

Although only established as a clear service at the beginning of 2017, Brabus Business already has a three-model range: the Brabus for Business S-Class/Maybach; the aforementioned Sprinter (in VIP Business Lounge or VIP Conference Lounge specification) and the Brabus for Business G-Class.

"It's a small business but it is growing and that's why we're getting ready to show a new model based on the Mercedes V-Class in Geneva," says Gramm.

And those that prefer the company's other side won't be disappointed either. Gramm promises that there will be a host of new highly tuned Mercedes making their debut too.

"In Geneva we have five world premieres," says Gramm. "You'll see something business focused, but you'll also see a nice, fast convertible, a big SUV, the new tuning programme for the latest-generation Mercedes E-Class."

The 2017 Geneva motor show opens its doors to the public from March 9.
