PETALING JAYA: Perodua has unveiled its entry variant Axia E which is targeted primarily at the lower-income group with a price of RM22,000 without insurance.

This variant is based on the first-generation Axia introduced in 2017 and is certified with a 4-star Asean NCAP rating by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS).

The Axia E is equipped with a 1.0-litre engine delivering 67hp(50kW)/91Nm, a five-speed manual transmission, two airbags, a driver seatbelt reminder and a five-year warranty.

Colours are Ivory White (solid), Glittering Silver and the new Granite Grey.

The budget variant was launched by Perodua chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin.

Since the Axia's run from 2014 until May 31, Perodua registered 606,756 units of the model, including the second-generation All-New Axia which was launched in February.

“The Perodua Axia E is part of our original objective of providing affordable and quality mobility for all Malaysians,” Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said.

He said the company is aiming to sell up to 1,500 units a month, which include individual owners and fleet sales.

“While we do not dictate who our customers are, we believe that having this model would be a welcome option by the majority of Malaysians," he said.

Zainal Abidin said the Axia has been market tested and proven over the years and the affordable variant would serve its current role of giving motorcycle owners an opportunity to own a new car.

“Based on our discussion with local financial institutions, we found that it only takes RM300 per month to pay the hire purchase cost of owning the Axia E.

“This is the same cost that would take for someone to buy a brand-new motorcycle on hire purchase,” said Zainal Abidin.
