Bugatti's carbon fibre key to desirability and success

PARIS: Bugatti, known for its high-performance hyper sports cars, relies heavily on carbon fibre for both functionality and aesthetics.

The material is used in the monocoque and body of the vehicles, providing strength and reducing weight.

The company offers customers a range of nine visible tinted carbon fibre colours for the body, showcasing the beauty of the fibres.

Creating this finish is a complex process that takes months to perfect, involving skilled craftspeople who understand the visual and structural importance of carbon fibre.

The carbon fibre body panels are made from thin sheets of woven fibres, with the direction of the fibres crucial to their strength. Bugatti engineers work with materials experts to ensure the fibres flow in the right direction to provide the necessary rigidity.

The design team also plays a role in determining the direction of the fibres for the visible carbon fibre finish, aiming to create a flowing pattern that enhances the car's lines.

Once the panels are completed, they are carefully aligned and fitted together to create a seamless look.

Paint technicians then apply a clear coat to the panels, sanding and polishing them to create a glossy finish that highlights the carbon fibre weave. Additional layers of clear coat can be applied by hand, depending on the desired finish.
