SACRAMENTO: California has given the green light for residents to wrap their front licence plates in lieu of using metal plates.

The traditional licence plate and its placement, though legally required, can often mar the looks of a car especially a sports car.

The wrap is simply a sticker that car owners can affix to the front of their cars.

The requirement for front licence plate vary from state to state in the US, with 31 of the 50 states making it mandatory.

California has been looking for alternatives to the metal licence plates for the past seven years.

It favoured and trialled the wrap proposal from a Huntington Beach, CA company called License Plate Wraps (LPW).

The pilot project in 2015 involved 28 vehicles from the California Highway Patrol starting in 2015. It went well and the state is now offering the wrap option to residents who are interested.

The pilot programme is ongoing until 2023.

To get the wrap, residents have to visit the LPW website and submit licence plate details.

LPW offers a choice of eight licence plate designs.
