NEW YORK: David Hasselhoff, best known as the crime-fighting and beach-strutting star of 1980s TV shows "Knight Rider" and "Baywatch", has sold one of the few replicas of the most famous talking car in television.

The AI-powered car known as K.I.T.T. from "Knight Rider" attracted around 30 bids at the online auction and finally sold for US$300,000 (RM1.2mil), according to the auction's website. The buyer was not immediately revealed.

The fully functional car belonged to Hasselhoff himself but was not used in front of the cameras during the series' production, the auctioneer said.

Although the car didn't come with the turbo boost or built-in AI that can talk, drive and smell, as fans of the show will remember, it did feature the same button-crammed cockpit seen in original episodes.

Pieces of clothing and cardboard cutouts of Hasselhoff in his attire from "Baywatch" were among the other items that went under the hammer, mostly for a few hundred dollars.

A lunch with the actor and singer brought in US$9,000 (around RM37,000), significantly lower than the expected price of US$20,000 (around RM81,000).

Hasselhoff's fame peaked in the 1980s and 1990s when he starred in hit television shows. As a singer he is mainly known for his song "Looking for Freedom."

In recent years, the 68-year-old's career has stalled. Hasselhoff has been promoting "The Hoff Auction" on Twitter and Instagram almost daily for weeks. He said in a Saturday video that he was going to give "lots of money" to charity.
