STARPICKS

As global concerns about climate change intensify, there is a desire to shift towards more sustainable transportation alternatives.

This movement is not merely a trend, but as indication of the inevitable future of the automotive landscape.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are at the forefront of this transformation, offering a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transportation.

This surge in popularity is driven by a confluence of environmental, technological and economic factors – making them a pivotal force in reshaping the automotive industry.

Importance of EVs
EVs are gaining traction due to numerous advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure which address the longstanding concerns of range anxiety, making EVs a more viable and attractive option for consumers.

Pure electric vehicles are particularly appealing to those seeking a forward-looking electric driving experience, urban convenience and commitment to a sustainable lifestyle.

Meanwhile, hybrid vehicles offer a transitional step towards an electric automotive journey, as they are equipped with a two-motor powertrain that offers the best of both worlds, as well as enhanced fuel economy.

Evolution of Volvo XC40
Recognising the need to align with the global shift towards cleaner alternatives, Volvo has been proactive in ushering in the era of electrification with its line of pure electric and mild hybrid vehicles.

The Swedish car manufacturer’s revamped line of its smallest SUV – the Volvo XC40 – stands as a testament to this commitment, offering both pure electric and mild hybrid variants to cater to diverse driving styles and lifestyles, ensuring “there is always a Volvo for everyone”.

From its initial launch in 2017 with traditional petrol and diesel variants, the Volvo XC40 has undergone a transformative journey.

In 2019, a plug-in hybrid variant was introduced as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, followed by a pure electric variant with an all-electric powertrain in 2021.

Features
Volvo offers excellent options in the compact SUV market with the launch of its new Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric and Volvo XC40 B5 variants.

As standard, both variants come with a slew of smart safety features including seven airbags, run-off road protection, a whiplash protection system, front and rear collision warning and mitigation support, a blind spot information system with steer assist, lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking.

The cars also come with additional assisted safety features such as a 360-degree parking view and cross-traffic alert with auto braking when reversing.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric variant even comes with an advanced body structure and unique battery safety cage to help protect all occupants in the event of a collision.

In terms of its battery and performance, this variant has a powerful two-motor powertrain system and a large high-voltage battery pack that promises a driving range of 418km.

The car can support 11kW AC charging or 150kW DC fast charging, which allows the battery pack to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes.

Both variants have a panoramic sunroof, an advanced air purification system that prevents up to 80% of hazardous fine particulate matter from entering the cabin and built-in Google Assistant, Google Play and Google Maps, which offer enhanced convenience while driving with real-time traffic information and automatic rerouting.

The Volvo XC40 is also equipped with a one-pedal drive system that nearly removes the need to step on the brake pedal.

This system uses the accelerator pedal to cause an instant speed retardation effect, meaning that the car will slow down once you lift or ease your foot off the pedal.

The new Volvo XC40 variants are also fitted with a Harman Kardon premium sound system, powered by a 600W digital amplifier and enabled by 13 hi-fi speakers, including an air-ventilated subwoofer.

This sound system is further enhanced by the Volvo XC40’s unique sound processing software – Dirac Unison Tuning – which optimises the response of each individual speaker, as well as the speaker system, to ensure they perform in perfect harmony.
