Chery Auto Malaysia issues recall for Omoda 5

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Auto Malaysia has started a recall for its Omoda 5 model following a recent incident where a part of the vehicle detached while being driven.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the company said the campaign would include variant C and H of the model, and that the company had been working closely alongside the Road Transport Department (JPJ) since the incident was first reported.

Chery Malaysia said customers could verify whether their vehicle is affected by checking the Vehicle Identification Number at the company's website.

"Customers will receive comprehensive vehicle inspections and any necessary follow-up actions including replacement of the component is free of charge," the company said.

Owners can also contact Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888.

Earlier on Sunday, JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) certificates for the Omoda 5 would be temporarily suspended, which would lead to the postponement of new registrations.

This is to allow a technical investigation to be conducted and safety risks to be identified.

"The action will be targeted at the models and variants potentially involved. At the same time, Chery Malaysia is required to identify all potentially affected vehicles based on their part numbers, production batches, Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and other relevant technical parameters.

"A recall must be carried out for all vehicles identified as being at risk for inspection and appropriate corrective action. JPJ will also conduct a technical audit of the Chery Omoda 5 production and assembly lines, as well as the relevant axle component suppliers,” he said.

He added that the audit would cover compliances, quality control systems, weld joint inspection procedures and the safety standards of the components used.

"The department wishes to emphasise that there will be no compromise on any non-compliance that could jeopardise the safety of road users.

"Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring that every vehicle marketed meets the prescribed safety standards and technical requirements," he said.
