Chery O5 enters the market at RM116,800 with new segment-first features


KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Malaysia's market entry sports utility vehicle (SUV) model has been given a 2025 update in the form a minor rebrand.

The newly launched Chery O5 is essentially the updated Omoda 5 model that has been rechristened to better reflect the brand assignment.

According to Chery, the name O5 was selected due to how widely the Omoda 5 was known as given its acronym.

“The model represents our commitment to continue offering vehicles that combine style, innovation, and practicality.

"With its segment-first multi-link independent rear suspension, expanded driving modes, and upgraded transmission, the O5 raises the bar for what young Malaysian drivers can expect from a stylish crossover,” said Chery Malaysia vice-president Lee Wen Hsiang.

Running on 18-inch Sporty Black alloy wheels, the SUV's silhouette remains largely the same as before. Most notable change is the new Pixel Diamond front grille, X-shaped front bumper, updated arrow-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights with Sequential Turn Signals, and a new spoiler design.

Under the hood is a returning 1.5T engine that produces 156PS and 230Nm of torque. The difference now is that it is paired with a new 6-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (6DCT) for quicker shifts and higher torque capacity - the Omoda 5 came with a nine-speed continuous variable transmission (CVT) electronic shifter.

As mentioned its driving dynamics have been further improved with the new multi-link independent rear suspension which is a first in its class.

Driving mode has been expanded to three - Eco, Normal, and Sport - compared to just two previously.

Inside the SUV is the debut of a 20.5-inch Integrated Dual Screen, alongside an upgraded frameless rear-view mirror and Dual Temperature Light Vanity mirrors on the sun visors.

Comfort features include Front Ventilated Seats for both driver and passenger, 6-way driver powered seat and 4-way front passenger powered seat, wireless phone charging, and a front centre armrest with cooling storage.

The cabin also boasts a Sony 8-speaker premium audio system, 64 Dynamic Multi-Coloured ambient lighting, power sunroof, and seamless wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Where safety is concerned, the O5 holds the same 5-star Asean NCAP safety rating as the Omoda 5.

This is attributed to its 78% high-strength steel body, six airbags, Isofix child seat anchors, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The 18 ADAS functions featured in the O5 includes: Front Collision Warning (FCW) Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) Traffic Jam Assistant (TJA), Integrated Cruise Control (ICC) Speed Control Assist (SCA), Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Speed Limit Assist (SLA) Lane Change Assist (LCA), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) Drive Away Information (DAI), Blind-spot Detection (BSD) Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), Traffic Signs Recognition (TSR), and Intelligent Headlight Control (IHC).

The SUV also comes with 540-degree HD Panoramic Camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Intelligent Headlight Control to help improve driver confidence on the road.

With a 2,630mm wheelbase, the model measures at 4,400mm in length with a width of 1830mm and height of 1,588mm. Boot capacity is 442 litres.

Priced at RM116,800, the O5 comes in Carbon Black, Phantom Grey, Khaki White and Blood Stone Red.

It comes standard with 7-years of warranty coverage or up to 150,000KM and labour only 5-years free service. There's 24/7 unlimited roadside assistance with Chery Insurance Programme.

To date Chery has sold over 13,000 units of the Omoda 5 in Malaysia since 2023. The new O5 is currently sold in 38 countries worldwide, including Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Mexico. It has achieved total sales of 44,769 units this year (Jan – Aug) alone.
