Continental trial using cloud service to track tyre tread depth a success

HANNOVER: Continental has successfully demonstrated real time tyre tread depth monitoring in a pilot that entailed electric vehicles of carsharing provider SHARE NOW Denmark.

In cooperation with its project partner and telemetry specialist Traffilog, the premium tyre manufacturer connected information of tyre sensors and telemetry data of the fleet’s cars with a proprietary algorithm in the cloud.

As a result, Continental can predict tyre tread depth in real time with an accuracy of below 1mm.

In future, smart digital tyre solutions like this will be a key driver to enable need-based servicing of tyres, instead of regular, scheduled servicing.

”With this pilot, we are the first in the market to offer significantly accurate tread depth monitoring via an algorithm," said Tansu Isik, Head of Business Development and Global Marketing at the Continental Tyres business area.

Benefits are more efficient fleet operations, minimised downtime due to repair, greater safety and reduced overall cost due to higher energy efficiency.

The real time tread depth measurement pilot is part of a bigger project in which Continental together with Traffilog also delivers real time remote tyre pressure and temperature monitoring of the entire fleet of SHARE NOW in Denmark, with around 600 cars in operation.

Continental was able to integrate its real time tyre monitoring solution into an already existing telematic setup.

To enable both capture and transfer of data, Traffilog modified its telematic unit to fit Continental’s requirements to harness the relevant data to feed its proprietary algorithm.
