Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV in the UK: Up to 1,043km

LONDON: The Deepal S05 Ultra PHEV is Changan’s first plug-in hybrid, joining the all-electric Deepal S05 and S07 in Changan UK's line-up.

On the WLTP cycle, the S05 Ultra PHEV delivers up to 62 miles (100km) of pure-electric range and a combined range of up to 648 miles (1,043km).

It is designed to drive as an electric car first.

The wheels are driven by the electric motor in almost all conditions, with the petrol engine generating electricity to drive the powertrain rather than powering the wheels directly.

For the driver, this means electric running for the commute, the school run and the shopping, and a petrol engine on hand for longer journeys, without the need to plan around charging.

It shares the S05's European-designed body, cabin and technology, and is offered in two trims, Pro and Max.

Changan Europe executive deputy general Ethan Yin said, "The S05 Ultra PHEV is built for UK drivers ready to make the move to electric on their own terms. It delivers real electric driving for the daily journeys, the commute and the school run, with a petrol engine on hand for longer trips."

The S05 Ultra PHEV combines a 172kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driving the front wheels with a 63kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

Total system output is 190kW (258PS/255bhp), with 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds.

Energy is stored in an 18.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the same chemistry used in the all-electric Deepal S05.

A 51-litre fuel tank supports the longer-distance side of the car's remit.

With the optional detachable tow bar, the S05 Ultra PHEV can tow up to 1,600kg braked.

Unusually for a plug-in hybrid, the S05 Ultra PHEV supports DC rapid charging, at up to 55kW, capable of charging the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in 15 minutes.

AC charging is supported at up to 11kW.

Styled at Changan's European design centre in Turin, Italy, the S05 Ultra PHEV carries over the S05's exterior design, honoured with the German iF Design Award in 2025.

Its aircraft-inspired design language features frameless doors, flush door handles and full-width LED rear lighting, with a low, forward-leaning stance.

A drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd supports efficiency at speed.

The car measures 4,598mm long with a 2,880mm wheelbase.

The cabin centres on a 15.4-inch high-definition touchscreen, which tilts towards or away from the driver on Max models to reduce glare.

Vegan leather upholstery is standard across the range, with 64-colour ambient lighting on Max.

The 2,880mm wheelbase provides generous rear legroom, and the rear seats fold completely flat.

Both Pro and Max trims come with the 15.4-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, online navigation, voice control and over-the-air (OTA) updates, along with a 360-degree camera with 'Transparent Chassis' view.

Max models add an augmented reality head-up display, 50W wireless smartphone charging and a 14-speaker sound system in place of the Pro's eight speakers.

The S05 Ultra PHEV has been awarded the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating and comes as standard with 17 driver assistance systems enabling SAE Level 2 assisted driving, supported by 14 sensors: six ultrasonic radars, three millimetre-wave radars, four surround-view cameras and one HD camera.
