DS design boss aims to banish screens from the car cabin

PARIS: DS design chief Thierry Métroz wants to get rid of screens in future cars from the marque, claiming that the present fad of having multiple large screens in the interior is "a little bit stupid."

He told UK-based Autocar that tacking on large screens in cabins is neither sexy nor luxurious as many automakers are wont to think.

Métroz said he is working to remove all screens in future DS models. But then how will the car provide necessary information to the driver?

Metroz went on to say the avantgarde marque is looking at new technology that are less intrusive and that would help create an environment of serenity in the cabin.

That all sounds like what BMW would call "shy tech" (as seen in the BMW iX) that refers to a set of discreet tech features that remain in the background until called upon by the user.

"The problem with the screen is when you switch off your screen, you’re just left with a rectangular black surface with all the fingerprints. It's not very sexy; it's not very luxury," said Metroz.

It remains to be seen how Metroz would execute his vision of a screenless DS while complying with regulations. For now, all models under DS, which is part of the Stellantis group, come with displays by default.
